Is the Whaley House Haunted

Posted by on in Articles

In the historic district of San Diego(2476 San Diego Avenue to be exact), sits a residence(now museum) made famous by its reported paranormal-activity; The Whaley Family House. This location has so many unexplainable/mysterious reports that the United States Chamber of Commerce has declared the famous spot to be genuinely haunted and was featured on the Travel Channels: America's Most Haunted. With all of the famous supposedly haunted places in this country, the travel channel selected The Whaley House to be the most haunted.

The Whaley house was made accessible for visitors around the world in 1960. Unexplainable events such as: objects moving without reason or cause, , unexplainable smells, lights turning on and off, feelings of being watched, mysterious- footsteps, cold-spots, sense of being touch, seeing apparitions and whatever else you can fit into the category of a haunting have been occurrences have been observed since.

The property was also used to hang the outlaw-Yankee, Jim Robinson in August, 1852. It's rumored that Robinson stole a boat(however, he proclaimed he was innocent). His spirit is reportedly seen at the Schooner Plautus sitting in a rowboat. His death didn't come so easy though. See, the gallows used to hang outlaw's were built for men of average-size. Jim Robinson was a tall man, instead of a simple neck-snap, Jim's feet drug the ground as he fought for air...death via strangulation according to dated history reports.

Thomas Whaley (October 5, 1823–December 14, 1890) purchased the property where the current museum sits back in September of 1855. He built a single-story granary to hold anywhere from 300,000 to 400,000 pounds of grain in 1856. His wife, Anna gave birth to six of Thomas' children. Anna Amelia, Francis Hinton and Thomas Whaley Jr. Thomas Jr. was diagnosed with Scarlet Fever at 18 months old and succumbed to the disease January 29, 1858.

In the mid 1860's three more children were born: George Hay Ringgold Whaley, Violet Eloise and Corinne Lillian. After a failed marriage and a bout of serious-depression, Violet Eloise committed suicide in the house on August 18, 1885 via gunshot to the heart.

The family even reported of hearing unexplainable-footsteps throughout the house while living there.

While Mr. Thomas Whaley Sr. did not die in the house, most of his immediate had. Four members of the Whaley's (including a dog)have passed away here. Stories have been told about the ghost of Anna Whaley being seen in her garden or other locations around the house, mostly rooms located downstairs. The ghost of Thomas Whaley's great grand-daughter who ate ant poison is rumored to grab the arms of visitors.

The family owned a dog (a terrier whose name was Dolly Varden). Supposedly, a video was caught showing an apparition of this dog running into another room of the estate and is claimed to lick the legs of women and in majority is seen by children.

If any of you have visited the Whaley House, please give us your report and let us know if you can verify that the Whaley House is indeed, haunted.
