Spooky Corner

One strange recurring encounter of mine is an Island that I used to live on. The Place was called Bowen Island, just off the coast of Vancouver B.C. The area I lived was a rural area, about a 45 minute walk from the town on the island.

There is one area known to the locals as "Spooky Corner", and from what I heard, it is where the Coast Salish Native tribe dealt with their dead (I haven't researched any archeological evidence, I've only heard.), It's a stretch of road about 500 meters long.

On one side of the road, all the trees and other plants are dead, and no animals make their homes in this particular area which I have ever noticed in 20 years of spending my summers there. After turning 19, I got a job at the Bowen Island pub, and since I didn't own a vehicle, I had to walk by Spooky Corner 5 nights a week after midnight.

As I would approach the corner, I'd notice a few things. If any of you have ever been on the B.C. coast, or the Pacific Northwest of the U.S.A., you probably know that the frogs and crickets are almost deafening at night.

When I'd get to the area, it was always dead silent.

I'd also get an overwhelming sense of terror and depression. The temperature would drop drastically, the night somehow seemed darker, as if the stars and moon weren't as bright over this area, and to top it all off, there is a lake at the end of this stretch of road, where I would always hear the sound of something very large jumping into the lake.

I'd always get the urge to run, but I was physically incapable of doing so.

After reaching the end, the noise would resume, the temperature would increase, the stars became bright again, and the terror would cease. I'm also sure it wasn't just my mind playing tricks on me, because normally I'm very comfortable being outside in the middle of the night in a secluded forested area.
